Dungeon Settlers Beginner Guide

Dungeon Settlers starts hard - the game even defaults to Hard difficulty, which Early Access players recommend keeping for your first run. This guide walks your first hours: a working settlement, a sane party, and a first dungeon run that comes back alive.

Build storage early. Without a storage building your settlers carry resources in personal inventories and cannot share them - the single most common beginner bottleneck.

First hours above ground

Your settlement starts on land isolated by magical erosion. Place walls and doors to shape rooms, then prioritize the basics: bedrooms and a dining area keep members functional, a forge with anvils and smelters turns loot into gear, and fields grow the crops that become expedition rations.

Note the indoor rule: the carpenter workstation and research station can only be built indoors, so plan a roofed building before recruiting crafters.

Your first party of four

Members have six major attributes plus dozens of combat and life stats, and traits based on race, background and personality - a curious Lizardman with a drifter's past is exactly the kind of recruit the game generates. Press Z to highlight harvestable objects and drag-select settlers to auto-harvest while you plan.

Skills branch into main skills (active abilities tied to weapon type) and sub-skills (passive boosts). A balanced first party covers a sword frontline, a ranged bow or sniper skill, and a fire-magic damage dealer.

The first dungeon run

Expeditions are real-time but you can pause at any moment - use the pause to position, queue skills and read enemy traits. Combat effects include stun, bleed, burn, provoke, vulnerable and charge attacks, and even hopeless battles can be turned with positioning.

Carry camping supplies and an Aid Kit. A downed character can be stabilized with an Aid Kit; left down too long, death is permanent. There is no resurrecting a lost settler.

What to do with the loot

Dungeon floors hold resources - wood logs, herbs, gemstone veins, mysterious mandrake - that feed the settlement: smelt in the forge, trade with dungeon merchants, research new buildings. Deeper floors pay rarer resources but spawn faster threats.

Do not over-farm one floor: repeatedly running the same level increases depletion and reduces item drops. Push depth instead.

FAQ

Is Dungeon Settlers hard for beginners?

Yes - the game defaults to Hard difficulty, and Early Access players recommend keeping it. Use the Crawling Doom tutorial mode to learn the loop before committing.

What should I build first?

Storage, then bedrooms and a dining area, then the forge. The carpenter and research stations must be placed indoors.

Can dead settlers come back?

No. Death is permanent. A downed character can be stabilized with an Aid Kit, but a true death is forever.

How big can my dungeon party be?

Up to four members per expedition, drawn from your settlement roster.
